Quaker Parrot – Smart, Social, and Talkative Companion Birds for UAE Homes

The Quaker Parrot (also known as the Monk Parakeet, Myiopsitta monachus) is a small, highly intelligent, and energetic parrot species loved for its ability to talk, mimic sounds, and bond closely with humans. These parrots are popular among bird enthusiasts in the UAE who are looking for an interactive, easy-to-train, and relatively low-maintenance companion.

At Sahara Exotics in Ajman, we offer hand-raised Quaker Parrots that are healthy, socialized, and ideal for both first-time bird owners and experienced keepers in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, and across the Emirates.

Appearance and Size

Quaker Parrots are compact and colorful birds with a cheerful appearance. They typically have a bright green body, pale gray face and chest, and blue flight feathers. Some mutations like blue, yellow, and white Quakers are also occasionally available depending on availability.

They reach a length of around 29 to 30 cm and weigh approximately 90 to 130 grams. Their compact size, coupled with a strong personality, makes them an attractive choice for people living in apartments or smaller homes in the UAE.

Personality and Behavior

Quaker Parrots are well known for their charming personalities and talkative nature. They are extremely social, love attention, and tend to bond very closely with their owner. When trained consistently, Quakers can build a wide vocabulary and mimic voices and household sounds with surprising clarity.

Behavior traits include:

  • Energetic and playful

  • Highly intelligent and trainable

  • Strong mimicking and talking ability

  • Curious, often exploring their surroundings

  • Can show territorial behavior without proper socialization

Quaker Parrots are not shy. They often enjoy being the center of attention and will call out or “chat” when they want interaction. They’re best suited for UAE households where they can receive daily engagement and supervised out-of-cage time.

Housing and Environment in the UAE

Although small in size, Quaker Parrots are active and need space to climb, stretch, and play. A minimum cage size of 24 x 24 x 30 inches is suitable, with bar spacing no more than ½ inch. For UAE homes, it’s important to place the cage in a well-lit indoor area, away from extreme heat or cold drafts.

Ideal housing tips:

  • Provide at least 2–3 perches of different textures

  • Offer toys for chewing and foraging

  • Clean the cage daily and rotate enrichment regularly

  • Maintain a temperature between 22°C and 28°C

  • Avoid placing the cage in direct sunlight or under air-conditioning airflow

Their cage should be in a location where they can observe daily household activity without feeling overwhelmed.

Diet and Nutrition

A well-balanced diet is essential to maintaining the energy, health, and vibrant feathers of a Quaker Parrot. Their diet should consist of pellets, fruits, vegetables, and occasional seeds.

Recommended daily food plan:

  • High-quality parrot pellets as a primary base

  • Fresh fruits like apples, mango, melon, and pomegranate

  • Leafy greens and vegetables such as spinach, carrots, and broccoli

  • Minimal use of unsalted seeds or nuts as treats

  • Always provide fresh, clean water

Avoid feeding them chocolate, avocado, caffeine, or processed human snacks, which can be harmful or toxic.

Lifespan and Care

Quaker Parrots have a long lifespan relative to their size, often living 20 to 30 years in captivity with proper care. They thrive on routine, social interaction, and mental stimulation.

To keep a Quaker happy and healthy in a UAE home:

  • Offer 1 to 2 hours of out-of-cage time daily

  • Engage them with talking, trick training, and play

  • Use positive reinforcement for behavior shaping

  • Maintain cleanliness and schedule annual vet checkups

They may become territorial or vocal if under-stimulated, so regular interaction is key to a calm, well-adjusted bird.

At Sahara Exotics, our Quaker parrots are raised in controlled environments, trained to be comfortable with handling, and provided with a solid foundation for speech development and bonding.
