The Green Winged Macaw

is a majestic and highly intelligent parrot, often referred to as the “gentle giant” of the macaw family. Known for its impressive size, rich coloration, and calm temperament, this bird is an ideal choice for experienced bird lovers in the UAE who are looking for a long-term, interactive avian companion.

At Sahara Exotics in Ajman, we offer hand-raised Green Winged Macaws that are well-socialized, health-checked, and ready for adoption into caring homes across Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, and other Emirates.

Appearance and Size

The Green Winged Macaw is one of the largest parrots in the world, second only to the Hyacinth Macaw. It has a striking combination of vibrant red feathers across its head and body, followed by bright green wings, and a touch of deep blue on the flight feathers. Its face is white and bare, with fine red feather lines around the eyes, giving it a very expressive and regal appearance.

This bird can reach up to 90 cm in length and weigh between 1,000 and 1,400 grams. Its size and commanding presence make it a centerpiece in any aviary or home setup.

Temperament and Intelligence

Despite its size, the Green Winged Macaw is known for its gentle and affectionate personality. It is often described as calm, social, and highly devoted to its human family. With proper socialization, these macaws form strong emotional bonds, often seeking cuddles, head rubs, and verbal interaction.

They are also incredibly smart, capable of mimicking words and sounds, solving puzzles, and learning complex tricks. In the UAE, they thrive in homes where they receive daily mental and physical stimulation, as well as regular one-on-one attention.

It’s important to note that, while not as loud or boisterous as some macaws, they are still vocal and will express themselves clearly—especially if ignored or understimulated.

Housing and Environment in the UAE

Due to their large size and active nature, Green Winged Macaws require spacious housing. A cage measuring at least 100 x 150 x 180 cm is the minimum, and ideally, they should also have access to a safe, bird-proofed indoor area for flying or playing.

Recommended setup:

  • Large, powder-coated cage or indoor aviary

  • Multiple perches at different heights

  • Tough chew toys made from wood or coconut shell

  • Food and water bowls placed apart to encourage movement

  • Full-spectrum lighting if housed indoors full-time

In UAE homes, keeping the bird indoors with climate control is essential. Avoid placing the cage near air conditioners or in direct sunlight. Outdoor time is possible but only in secure, shaded aviaries under supervision.

Nutrition and Feeding

The Green Winged Macaw needs a nutrient-rich, varied diet to support its strong body and colorful feathers.

Recommended foods include:

  • High-quality macaw pellets (main base)

  • Fresh fruits like papaya, apple, berries, and melon

  • Vegetables such as sweet potato, broccoli, and kale

  • Raw nuts in moderation: walnuts, almonds, pistachios

  • Occasional cooked grains or seeds for variety

Fresh, clean water should be available at all times. Avoid feeding avocado, chocolate, caffeine, or anything high in salt or fat, as these are toxic to parrots.

Lifespan and Commitment

With the right care, a Green-Winged Macaw can live 50 to 70 years, making it a lifetime commitment. These birds thrive on routine, affection, and interaction. They’re best suited for dedicated owners who view them as part of the family, not just a pet.

Signs of a happy Green-Winged Macaw include regular vocalizations, strong appetite, playful behavior, and trust in their handlers. Behavioral issues, such as feather plucking or aggression, are usually caused by boredom or neglect and can be avoided with regular attention and proper enrichment.

At Sahara Exotics, we are proud to offer Green-Winged Macaws raised with care and attention from the start. Each bird is handled daily and accustomed to human interaction, ensuring a smooth transition into new homes in the UAE.
