Alexandrine Parrots are admired for their striking appearance, calm demeanor, and talking ability. Named after Alexander the Great, who is believed to have introduced them to Europe, these parrots are one of the oldest known pet bird species. In the UAE, they are gaining popularity too much for their intellectual behavior.

At Sahara Exotics in Ajman, we offer healthy, well-socialized Alexandrine Parrots suitable for beginners and experienced bird keepers across Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, and the rest of the Emirates.

Appearance and Size

Alexandrine Parrots are instantly recognizable due to their vivid green plumage, maroon shoulder patches, and long tapering tail feathers. Their large red beak and intelligent eyes give them a confident and expressive look. Males are distinguished by a black and pink ring (neck ring) around the nape, while females generally lack this marking.

These parrots are one of the largest parakeet species, reaching up to 58–62 cm in length, with a wingspan of over 80 cm. Their long tail feathers make them appear even more elegant and commanding.

Behavior and Personality

Known for their gentle nature and curiosity, Alexandrine Parrots are relatively calm compared to other large parrot species. They enjoy interacting with their owners and can form strong bonds when handled regularly. While they are not as clingy as some parrots, they still require daily engagement and companionship to remain happy and healthy.

These parrots are also excellent learners. With consistent training, they can mimic human speech, learn tricks, respond to commands, and even solve simple puzzles. In UAE homes, they make excellent companions for owners who want a bird that is both independent and affectionate.

Housing and Environment

Due to their long tail and active nature, Alexandrine Parrots require a spacious cage that allows them to stretch, climb, and play. A cage size of at least 36 x 24 x 48 inches is recommended, along with time outside the cage for free flight or interaction.

Key housing needs:

  • Multiple perches at different levels

  • Sturdy toys for chewing and enrichment

  • Natural wood branches for beak conditioning

  • Clean, ventilated indoor space with controlled temperature (22°C to 28°C)

In the UAE climate, keeping Alexandrine Parrots indoors with proper air circulation is preferred. If taken outdoors, they should be in a secure, shaded aviary and supervised closely.

Feeding and Diet

Alexandrine Parrots thrive on a balanced, varied diet that meets their nutritional needs and supports feather health and energy.

Ideal daily diet includes:

  • High-quality parrot pellets

  • Fresh fruits like apples, bananas, grapes, and papaya

  • Leafy greens and vegetables (spinach, carrots, bell peppers)

  • Occasional raw nuts (almonds, walnuts, pine nuts)

  • Cooked legumes or brown rice in moderation

Avoid giving avocado, caffeine, alcohol, salty foods, and chocolate as these are harmful to parrots. Clean water should always be available in stainless steel bowls.

Talking Ability and Training

Alexandrine Parrots are considered one of the better talkers among medium-sized parrots. They can learn a wide range of words and sounds, often speaking with clarity and purpose. However, their talking ability depends on regular interaction, social exposure, and individual personality.

Training tips:

  • Start with simple words and phrases

  • Use positive reinforcement (treats or praise)

  • Keep training sessions short and fun

  • Be patient; consistent interaction yields better results

Their calm, focused nature also makes them suitable for clicker training and basic behavioral commands.

Lifespan and Care Commitment

With proper care, Alexandrine Parrots can live 25 to 30 years, making them a long-term companion. They require attention, mental stimulation, and physical activity to remain emotionally and physically healthy.

Routine veterinary check-ups, wing and nail trimming, and regular cage cleaning are part of responsible care. These birds are not prone to aggression but can become withdrawn if neglected.

At Sahara Exotics, our Alexandrine Parrots are raised in well-managed environments to encourage social behavior and human bonding. Whether you’re in Ajman or anywhere in the UAE, we guide you in proper setup, feeding, and long-term bird care.
