Hermann’s Tortoise – A Small, Hardy, and Friendly Pet Tortoise for UAE Homes
The Hermann’s Tortoise (Testudo hermanni) is a small, terrestrial tortoise species native to southern Europe, widely loved for its manageable size, gentle nature, and adaptability. Known for its attractive golden-brown shell and peaceful demeanor, it makes an ideal reptile companion for beginners and experienced keepers alike. In the UAE, Hermann’s Tortoises thrive when kept in thoughtfully maintained enclosures with access to natural sunlight and proper diet.
At Sahara Exotics in Ajman, we offer healthy, captive-bred Hermann’s Tortoises that are well-started and suitable for homes across Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, and other Emirates. They are especially popular among families and individuals looking for a low-maintenance, long-living pet with character.
Appearance and Size
Hermann’s Tortoises are easily recognized by their domed shell, bold yellow and black markings, and sturdy, scaly legs. Their tail ends in a distinctive horny spur, and they have a slightly hooked beak, typical of Mediterranean tortoise species.
-
Adults: Typically 15 to 20 cm in shell length
-
Weight: 1 to 2 kg
-
Lifespan: 40–80 years with proper care
Their small size and slow growth make them easier to house than larger species like the Sulcata Tortoise, making them a favorite for urban homes with patios, gardens, or even well-ventilated indoor enclosures.
Behavior and Temperament
Hermann’s Tortoises are peaceful, solitary reptiles with a calm personality. They are not aggressive, making them suitable even around children (with supervision). While not interactive like cats or dogs, they do learn to associate people with feeding and may become more outgoing over time.
Typical behaviors:
-
Diurnal – most active during daylight hours
-
Love to explore, bask, and dig shallow burrows
-
Not climbers, but good at squeezing through gaps, so enclosures must be secure
-
Prefer a quiet, stable environment
They’re ideal for observation rather than handling, although occasional, gentle interaction is well tolerated if the tortoise is relaxed and acclimated.
Housing in UAE Climate
Hermann’s Tortoises adapt well to the UAE’s dry climate, provided they have shaded areas, proper hydration, and protection from extreme summer heat.
Outdoor setup (preferred):
-
Space: At least 1.5 m x 1.5 m for a single adult
-
Fencing: Secure, solid borders 30–40 cm high and buried 10 cm below ground
-
Substrate: Natural soil, sand-loam mix, or a blend with dry grass
-
Shelter: Hide box or shaded area with good airflow
-
Temperature range:
-
Daytime: 25°C to 32°C
-
Basking spot: 35°C (under sunlight or lamp)
-
Night: Should not fall below 18°C
-
-
Humidity: 40% to 60%, with regular misting during hot months
Indoor setup (if required):
-
Open-top tortoise table or low-walled terrarium
-
UVB lighting (12 hours per day)
-
Basking lamp for daytime heat
-
Soil-based substrate or coco fiber with dry moss
Whether kept indoors or outdoors, Hermann’s Tortoises must be protected from predators (including cats or birds), excess humidity, and cold drafts in winter.
Diet and Nutrition
Hermann’s Tortoises are strict herbivores. Their diet should replicate what they eat in the wild: fibrous plants, weeds, and leafy greens.
Feeding guidelines:
-
Daily diet of dark leafy greens: Dandelion, endive, romaine, arugula
-
Safe weeds: Plantain, chickweed, clover
-
Occasional additions: Cactus pads, squash, or hibiscus leaves
-
Supplements: Calcium powder 3–4 times per week
-
Avoid: Fruits, high-protein foods, iceberg lettuce, and animal-based items
Fresh water should be available in a shallow dish, and occasional soaking in shallow warm water helps with hydration and digestion.
Lifespan and General Care
With the right setup and routine, Hermann’s Tortoises can live for 50 years or more, often becoming lifelong companions passed down through generations.
Ongoing care includes:
-
Daily feeding and monitoring activity
-
Weekly cleaning of enclosure and water bowls
-
Shell and weight checks every few months
-
Annual health check-ups with an exotic vet
At Sahara Exotics, we offer healthy, well-started Hermann’s Tortoises and all the supplies you need for proper care in the UAE—substrate, hides, lighting, calcium supplements, and guidance.
