Cockatiels
Cockatiels are gentle, affectionate, and expressive parrots that thrive in UAE homes. Their playful personality, beautiful crest, and ease of care make them ideal for families and first-time bird owners.
Cockatiels – Friendly, Gentle, and Charming Pet Birds for UAE Families
Cockatiels are among the most popular pet birds worldwide, loved for their gentle personality, attractive crest, and expressive behaviors. Known scientifically as Nymphicus hollandicus, cockatiels originate from Australia and have become a favorite among bird lovers in the UAE for their affectionate nature, trainability, and manageable size.
At Sahara Exotics in Ajman, we provide hand-raised cockatiels that are healthy, social, and ready for adoption throughout Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and other Emirates. Whether you’re a first-time bird owner or an experienced keeper, a cockatiel is a rewarding choice for any household.
Appearance and Physical Traits
Cockatiels are medium-sized parrots, typically measuring around 30 to 33 cm in length, including their long tail feathers. They weigh approximately 80 to 120 grams. The most recognizable feature is their expressive head crest, which rises or lowers depending on their mood.
While the classic cockatiel has grey feathers, a yellow face, and orange cheek patches, selective breeding has introduced a variety of color mutations including lutino (white and yellow), pied, albino, cinnamon, and pearl. These visually unique birds are available at Sahara Exotics based on availability.
Their appearance is not only charming but also practical—cockatiels use their crest, body posture, and chirps to communicate their emotions, making them easy to understand for attentive owners.
Behavior and Personality
Cockatiels are known for being affectionate, intelligent, and easy to train. They enjoy interaction with people, respond well to gentle voice and handling, and can form close bonds with their caregivers.
Common behavioral traits include:
-
Calm and non-aggressive nature
-
Ability to mimic simple sounds and whistles
-
Enjoyment of shoulder-sitting and head scratches
-
Strong interest in daily routines and surroundings
Cockatiels are ideal for families, individuals, and even households with children, as long as gentle handling and respectful behavior are practiced. They do best with daily interaction and thrive in a peaceful indoor setting.
Housing and Environment in the UAE
A spacious cage is essential for a cockatiel’s well-being. For one bird, a cage size of at least 24 x 24 x 30 inches is recommended, with wider dimensions for pairs. Bar spacing should be between ½ to ⅝ inch to prevent injury.
Tips for a suitable UAE home setup:
-
Keep the cage indoors, away from direct sunlight and strong air-conditioning
-
Maintain indoor temperatures between 22°C and 28°C
-
Use multiple perches, ladders, and chewable toys
-
Clean the cage regularly and provide fresh water daily
While cockatiels are comfortable with UAE indoor climates, outdoor aviary time can be offered in shaded, secure enclosures during mild weather, with close supervision.
Diet and Feeding
A balanced diet helps ensure a long, healthy life and maintains vibrant feather quality. Cockatiels do best on a base of pellets, supplemented with fresh fruits, vegetables, and occasional seeds.
Recommended daily nutrition:
-
Pellet-based cockatiel or small parrot feed
-
Fresh leafy greens and vegetables like carrots, spinach, and bell peppers
-
Fruits such as apple, papaya, melon, and berries (in small amounts)
-
Cooked whole grains such as rice or quinoa
-
Millet spray or small seed mix as a treat, not a staple
-
Fresh water available at all times
Avoid avocados, chocolate, caffeine, and salty or sugary human foods, which can be toxic.
Lifespan and Care
Cockatiels have a lifespan of 15 to 20 years, with some individuals living even longer under ideal care. They require mental stimulation, regular handling, and a stable daily routine to stay emotionally and physically healthy.
Daily care includes:
-
Replacing food and water
-
Cleaning the cage base and perches
-
Providing at least 1 hour of interaction or supervised playtime
-
Rotating toys to prevent boredom
-
Offering quiet space for rest during the evening
At Sahara Exotics, all our cockatiels are raised in social conditions and are accustomed to human interaction, making them easier to tame and bond with in their new homes.
