Appearance and Size

Bearded Dragons are medium-sized lizards that typically grow to about 40–60 cm in length, including their tail. They have broad, triangular heads, muscular limbs, and a flat body covered in spiny scales, especially around their throat—giving rise to the “beard” that puffs out when they feel threatened or excited.

These lizards come in a variety of colors and morphs, from standard tan and sandy tones to brighter hues like citrus, red, and translucent. Breeders continue to develop new morphs, making each dragon unique.

Their expressive eyes and occasional head bobs, arm waving, and color changes add to their appeal as interactive pets.

Behavior and Temperament

Bearded Dragons are widely known for their docile and sociable nature. They tolerate handling well, often enjoy basking on their owner’s shoulder or hand, and rarely show aggression when properly cared for. They are one of the few reptiles that visibly bond with their keepers.

• Substrate: Reptile carpet, tile, or non-loose material (avoid sand)

• Temperature:

  • Basking spot: 37°C to 42°C

  • Cool side: 26°C to 30°C

  • Night: 20°C to 24°C

• Lighting: Full-spectrum UVB light for 10–12 hours daily

• Decor: Branches, rocks, basking platforms, and hide boxes

• Humidity: Maintain at 30%–40% with good ventilation

Bearded Dragons require a thermal gradient in their enclosure, allowing them to move between hot and cool areas for thermoregulation.

Feeding and Diet

Bearded Dragons are omnivores. Their diet includes both insects and vegetables, and feeding them is relatively easy and affordable.

Daily feeding plan:

• Protein (juveniles): Crickets, mealworms, dubia roaches (once or twice daily)

• Protein (adults): 3–4 times per week

• Vegetables: Leafy greens, squash, carrots, pumpkin – daily

• Occasional fruits: Mango, berries, banana (as treats only)

• Supplements: Calcium with vitamin D3 (3x/week), multivitamins (1x/week)

All insects should be gut-loaded and dusted with supplements before feeding. Clean water should always be available in a shallow dish.

Lifespan and General Care
